Exercise

It is important for individuals with edema to be physically fit and maintain a healthy weight.  The type of exercise that is best for the individual depends on the severity and the cause of edema and other medical conditions. Exercises should be performed slowly and progressing gradually. Studies have shown that aerobic and resistance exercises are safe and beneficial for people with lymphedema if they follow the guidelines of progressing slowly, use the recommended compression, and report any adverse effects to their medical practitioner who can help them adapt the exercises safely. Take breaks to monitor the extremity for any change in size, shape, texture, soreness, heaviness or firmness.
